HP-EDS merger gets US approval PDF Print E-mail

HEWLETT-Packard’s planned acquisition of services giant Electronic Data Systems for US$12.6 billion (A$13.1 billion) has been given the go-ahead by US anti-trust regulators, both companies announced.

HP and EDS said they had not been asked for additional information by the Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department by the expiry of a special waiting period on acquisitions – effectively meaning the agencies had no problems with the deal.

HP is still waiting to hear from European anti-trust regulators. It must also get approval from EDS shareholders at a July 31 shareholders meeting for the deal to go ahead.

EDS is one of the largest services companies in the world and is a pioneer of the outsourced IT services business.

The acquisition is seen as a strategic move to better enable HP to compete with the services market leader IBM.
